💡Luxury Tidbit 💡
Did you know? Veuve Clicquot was the First Champagne Brand to use of a quality-enhancing technique known as "Remuage". 🍾
The story of Veuve Clicquot dates back to the early 19th century and is centered around one remarkable woman: Barbe-Nicole Clicquot Ponsardin, also known as the "Grande Dame of Champagne" or simply Madame Clicquot.
After the untimely death of her husband François Clicquot, Barbe-Nicole took over the family's champagne business at the age of 27.
Despite facing immense challenges, including the Napoleonic Wars and economic instability, Madame Clicquot revolutionized the champagne industry and transformed her husband's small wine business into one of the world's most renowned champagne houses.
Madame Clicquot's innovations were groundbreaking. She perfected the process of riddling, which involves gradually rotating champagne bottles to remove sediment, resulting in clearer and more refined wines. She also innovated the application of a technique called "remuage," which is:
Bottling: Base wine is bottled with sugar and yeast to induce a second fermentation.
Second Fermentation: Wine is capped and laid horizontally for fermentation, creating bubbles.
Sediment Formation: Yeast cells settle at the bottom of the bottle, forming sediment.
Remuage: Bottles are tilted and rotated to move sediment towards the neck.
Disgorgement: Sediment is frozen, expelled, and the bottle is corked.
Dosage: A small amount of wine is added to adjust sweetness, and the bottle is corked and secured.
Additionally, Madame Clicquot introduced the first known vintage champagne in 1810, setting a new standard for luxury and quality in the industry.
Beyond her contributions to winemaking, Madame Clicquot was a visionary businesswoman who understood the importance of branding and marketing. She famously chose the distinctive yellow label for her champagne, making Veuve Clicquot instantly recognizable and synonymous with quality and prestige.
Madame Clicquot's entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to excellence continue to inspire champagne enthusiasts and connoisseurs worldwide.
