The Met Gala was first introduced in 1948 by the iconic fashion publicist Eleanor Lambert as a way to raise money for the newly-founded Costume Institute and mark the opening of its annual fashion exhibition. In its early years, it was a relatively small, elite affair attended mainly by members of high society and industry insiders.

Over the decades, the Met Gala has grown into a massive multimedia spectacle, with every aspect, from the guest list to the themed dress code, heavily influened and scrutinised. Since 1995, when Vogue took over as the organiser, editor-in-chief Anna Wintour has reigned as the chairwoman, carefully controlling all aspects from décor to publicity.

The event now takes place on the first Monday in May at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Guests are given a specific dress code to align with that year's Costume Institute exhibit theme. From "Punk: Chaos to Couture" to "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination," the themes allow attendees to essentially arrive as living art pieces. This year’s theme is “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion”

The most anticipated part is the red carpet fashion showcase, where the world's top celebrities, models, designers, and fashion icons go all-out with avant garde, theatrical looks interpreting the theme. Their daring outfit choices are then endlessly dissected and memorialised.

Beyond the red carpet, the ultra-exclusive event includes a formal dinner, a live performance, and a chance to preview the Institute's new annual exhibition before it opens to the public. It's a major fundraising event for the Costume Institute, with tickets rumoured to cost $35,000 apiece. The night celebrates fashion as a true work of art, and it will always be.
